What is an Eating Disorder?
|
Many people are led to believe that an Eating Disorder is all about being out of control aroundfood. This may be true in part, but food is only an outward response to deep emotional pain and conflict from within combined with low self esteem. In short, food is a way of distracting the sufferer from emotional stress.
This emotional stress leads sufferers to have a negative perception of themselves, seeing themselves as bad, or being dissatisfied with their body image. So food is used as an inappropriate way of taking control.

Anorexia and bulimia involve severe food restriction. But bulimia also includes bingeing on large amounts of food in an uncontrolled way and then vomiting, using laxatives or over exercising to get rid of the food eaten.
Binge eating and obesity also involves eating large amounts of foods in an uncontrolled way, but not using laxatives or vomiting.
